Chapter 14

Guided by Kendra's security detail, Bishop and Kasey were led through the hotel to a fortified bunker. As they approached, Kasey recognized the guards standing outside it. The gunmetal gray suits of the ADI were distinctive, but it was the battle staff that each of them carried that she recognized immediately.

Each of the agents kept a ready lookout and Kasey couldn't help but notice that beneath their suit coats all of them were wearing bullet-proof vests. The ADI were ready for war.

As they approached, Kendra's security detail pulled out a remote and pressed a round button on its face.

The heavily reinforced steel doors swung inward slowly as motors hidden in the wall whirred quietly in the background.

Inside, the bunker was dominated by a large rectangular hardwood table, and one wall of the conference room featured a bank of screens showing readouts of the news, and maps of Manhattan and the tristate area.

In spite of its size, the table itself had few vacant seats. Most of the Arcane Council were present, including the chancellor, but there were also some faces Kasey hadn't expected to see. Chief West, her old boss and captain of the Ninth Precinct, was seated between two other police officers who judging from their uniforms were also captains. Beside them sat Kendra Harrington. She smiled at Kasey as she made her way around the table to a pair of vacant seats.

Strang, naturally, was in attendance, and like her agents she was dressed for war. Her oak staff rested casually against the table beside her. Stacey Linda, the Keeper of Knowledge, was also present. Heironymous, emissary of the gods, was seated quietly sipping something out of a large mug, and at the head of the table was Sanders. He looked up from a stack of papers in front of him, and as his eyes settled on Kasey, a smile formed on his lips. His eyes followed Kasey to her seat.

Vincent Kane, head of the Administorum, and Michael Rosenberg head of Judiciary were both absent. As was Talora though Kasey had expected as much after their mad dash through Faerie.

“Kasey,” Kendra called, “good of you to join us. I take it that you were able to get some rest.”

She looked at her watch and gave the smile of a gracious host who had achieved her objective.

“A good deal more than I had expected. Thanks for that,” Kasey replied as she took her seat halfway down one side of the table. Bishop took the seat beside her, and Kasey turned to Sanders. “Sorry I'm late. Last night didn't quite go as I'd expected.”

Sanders’ eyes never left her. As a wrinkle appeared in his furrowed brow, she recognized the concern that he left unspoken.

“Marion and Bishop have filled us in on the assault and subsequent death of Marius, heir to the Feudal Court. Is there anything you'd like to add?”

Kasey was confident that the two law enforcement officers would have adequately briefed the assembly on the raid, so she considered what she might add.
